If these 'gentlemen' and a Lady succeed...

McCain, Warner, Collins and Graham have all virtually guaranteed they will never get my vote for anything mor important then dogcatcher and their opponent in that race would have to be pretty bad...

In the committee vote, Warner was supported by GOP Sens. McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine. Warner, McCain and Graham had been the most active senators opposing Bush’s plan.

A moderately pro-American French politician?

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, who might win the French Presidency, may actually like America?

Many other European leaders close to Bush, such as British Prime Minister Tony Blair, have suffered politically. But in some parts of Tuesday's speech, Sarkozy delivered the kind of rhetoric that would be expected of a Bush administration official, especially on Iran, Israel and counterterrorism, said Jonathan Laurence, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. "There is not a whole lot of daylight between Sarkozy and Washington on some key foreign policy issues," he said.

I find this interesting...

Sistani doubles down.

The Grand Ayatollah isn't quite ready to quit...

The Shi'ites had jealously viewed Kurdish semi-independence for years and eagerly pursued this proposal. With hardly any effort, Sistani swatted it down almost immediately. His pronouncement, as announced by Mashhadani, ordered the leading faction's politicians to stop considering the plan, and Mashhadani sounded happy to comply. He acknowledged that the country did not have a strong enough security apparatus to hold together in such a structure, and his allies quickly fell into line.

3 cheers for DARPA.

I hope we can use this to help our guys and gals wounded in the GWOT.

The above picture is of a Tennessee man named Jesse Sullivan. His left arm, holding the paint roller is BIONIC. His newfound ability to paint, and engage in other fine motor controlled actions? Brought to him by the good folks at DARPA.

Bush's poll numbers are up.

Seems the base is coming back. I am not sure if it is fear of a Dem win or post 9/11 whimsy.

Update: I corrected the spelling in the title.

NATO: Are they ready to surrender?

The commander in Afganistan has requested 2-2.5k troops to reinforce the Nato mission in Afganistan and let just say our Nato allies are being coy. Poland is willing to step into the breach with 1,000 troops early next year, but the mighty EU can only find 14700 now and early next year up the count to 15700? Color me unimpressed.

Update: Mr Kurtz in the Corner opens both barrels.

Again, this is Afghanistan, where we’ve been happily multilateral, not Iraq. If NATO cannot fight here, what good is it? Given a chance to help us, in circumstances where we are in agreement, our European allies have simply failed. Can the Europeans seriously hope to bargain Iran into giving up its nuclear weapons when it can’t collectively scrounge up 2,500 troops, all of whom were supposed to have been committed more than a year ago? Bin Laden is laughing. Ahmadinajad is doubled over. And NATO is just plain over.

Former Texas Governer Ann Richards passes

My best wishes to her family and friends:

Former Gov Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died Wednesday night after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73.

She died at home surrounded by her family, the spokeswoman said. Richards was found to have esophageal cancer in March and underwent chemotherapy treatments.

God bless and God speed Mrs Richards.

The perfect 9/11 tribute

I struggled to try to come up with the best tribute to the best of AQmerica which was on display on that fateful day. The best I can come up with came from an interview Matt over at BlackFive.net gave to Pundit Review radio. Click through and meet Rick Rescorla, the man who almost single handedly saved over 2,600 people from the Towers on that fateful day. If we can find but 1,000 men like Rick, I'd fear no enemy. The link to Mudville is worth your time also.

9/11, the overview

This is the time of year I dread. The fall of the towers is etched in my memories. I really don't need to see it again so I am going to avoid CBS's 9/11. Docudramas tend to mix fact and fiction, so ABS's 'The Path to 9/11' is another I will avoid. Memri.org has an interesting webcast on the Arab view of 9/11 I would suggest anyone interested in such watch. It is an eye opener for anyone who isn't fully aware of Arab reaction to 9/11.

9/11/1595

A much older confrontation between the West and a Muslim foe (Ottoman Turkey):

The fifth anniversary of September 11th 2001 is upon us. It is fitting that the day should see both a solemn remembrance of the dead and the renewal of a cold-hearted resolve to win the war that was declared on us.

There is however, another September 11th that we should also remember, and from which we can take heart in our own struggle. It is September 11th 1565; the scene was different and so were the actors too, but the nature of the battle was all too familiar. On that day, a small force of European knights and the entire population of Malta dealt Ottoman Turkey a decisive defeat, and in doing so probably saved western civilization.

The way Bin Laden and Al Queda whine about the loss of the Caliphate and Al-Andalus, I feel the need to mention it :)

The UK isn't quite ready to give up on Afganistan

I posted earlier on Bill Roggio's belief that the Euros are skittish about Afganistan. His contention was:

While their tactics are poor, the Taliban is accomplishing the desired effect of weakening the resolve of the NATO countries participating in Afghanistan.

The UK
seems to agree at least to a degree:

More British troops and helicopters are on standby for deployment to Afghanistan, a highly controversial development that will compound unease over UK operations in the increasingly volatile Helmand province.

If other members of the Nato alliance refuse to supply the reinforcements of soldiers and equipment demanded by its military chief, Whitehall sources have conceded for the first time that extra UK troops will make up the shortfall.
